Apple and Google: Helping You or the FBI?

According to Time Magazine. FBI Director, James Comey stated that, "the advanced data encryption technologies that companies like Apple and Google say they will offer their customers, and implied that the government might attempt regulations to ensure a way around them." This could be an issue for consumers. With most of our life on the internet or "cloud" (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.). How can you trust those companies to keep your data private and away from the hands of the government.

In December of last year there were leaked documents that showed the NSA was able to tap into people's iPhones and see their text messages. While Apple denies these claims, it is still scary that the government could access that much personal information about you.

In order to stop these fears Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and many other tech companies have started ramping up security measures and encryption methods to try and prevent the government or hackers from stealing your data.

Unfortunately, it seems that the FBI is not pleased with these new changes and will attempt to get Apple and Google to "back down" and remove restrictions of governmental access to data.

What do you think? Is Apple and Google working for your own interest or that of the governments?

  1. Although I do think that Apple and Google are not pleased that the government can access that much information, I think that they will eventually lift these restrictions from the government. Even though these monster companies hold a lot of power, I doubt they would want to get into any sort of trouble with the government. It might be easier for them to simply give them the information or access that they want. However, I do not think that they are in any way working for the interest of the government. I believe they merely hold an extensive amount of personal information that the government wants.
