Apple: Phones, iPads, Watches, Now Cars?

As you may or may not have heard, Apple is rumored to be developing a self driving car. Although it's only a rumor for now, it has attracted the attention of the CEO of Mercedes. He says, however, "I'll worry about an Apple car when Apple starts worrying about a Mercedes phone"(IEEE). This is a snide remark at Apple, almost mocking them for not being a real threat in the car industry. But for a company worth almost a trillion dollars, anything is possible.

Apple released the Car Play software last year, and it will be in many 2015/2016 model cars, including the new Volvo XC90. However, Apple is targeting more established car brands. BMW is reported to be the first car maker that will get an app on the Apple Watch when it releases next month. Coincidentally, the app will be for the BMW "i Series" car line, much like how Apple has the "i Device lines".

This is still an interesting business move for Apple; they are primarily seen as makers of portable electronics. So making a car seems like an illogical step for Apple. Although, with the rise of texting and driving or distracted driving in general, it might actually be a very logical step for Apple. Nobody has fun being stuck in traffic during their daily commute, wouldn't it be nice to have a car that could drive you so you could check your facebook or instagram? I think this is the goal that Apple is trying to achieve, they want to be a part of every aspect of your life, from the phone you use, to the car you drive.

So what do you think, will Apple try and push its way into the car industry as well?
